Ohio & Erie Canalway

The Ohio & Erie Canalway is a National Heritage Area designated by Congress to help preserve and celebrate the rails, trails, landscapes, towns, and sites from the first 110 miles of the canal that helped Ohio -- and our nation -- grow.

Built in the 1820s and 30s, the Ohio & Erie Canal provided an invaluable link to the nation's water-based transportation system. Extending from Lake Erie to the Ohio River, the Ohio & Erie Canal completed a water route between the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico. It helped advance westward expansion and defined the settlement of numerous towns, villages, and cities along its course. It attracted businesses to its flanks and provided a viable transportation route for emerging industries.

Today, the Ohio & Erie Canalway is a place to experience trails, trains, scenic byways, canal towns, ethnic neighborhoods, working rivers, great lakes, industrial landscapes, and green spaces.

Explore the Towpath Trail, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway, the America's Byway, and so much more. From bird watching to rock climbing, the Canalway offers something for everyone.
