Downtown Akron
Akron has a colorful history. Part of the still untamed frontier of the Western Reserve, access to the outside world was difficult. Akron's growth was spearheaded by the building of the Ohio & Erie Canal in 1825. The canal and its towpath are an important part of Akron's history. Today, the Towpath Trail Bridge connects Downtown Akron to the popular Towpath Trail and the parks, trails and greenways of our region to the North. Visitors can utilize the trail by getting on and off at Lock 1, Lock 2, Lock 3, State St., Bowery & Quaker St., the Towpath Bridge at the Innerbelt (Route 59), Beech St. and the Mustill Store.
