Akron: OverviewWelcome to Akron! We’re delighted to acquaint you with all the great attractions, dining spots to match your culinary interests and budget, and cultural institutions that will delight lovers of technology, art, theater, history and music, such as the Akron Museum of Art. Wonderful parks include the 33,000-acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park, where you can even hike and bike along the Towpath Trail once used by mules pulling the barges on the Ohio and Erie Canal. Akron’s location at the summit of the canal, which connected Lake Erie and the Ohio River, provided the stimulus for its manufacturing industry. Called “The Rubber Capital of the World,” Akron was the headquarters of B. F. Goodrich, Firestone, Goodyear, Seiberling and General Tire. The city is now better known for its research, particularly in polymer science at the University of Akron, its beautiful neighborhoods, Akron Aeros at Canal Park, and great proximity to area attractions and Amish country. |
